Venue & Accomodation

The conference will take place on the campus of TU Hamburg. TU Hamburg is located in Harburg, which is the part of Hamburg south of River Elbe.

The lectures will be given in Bulding H. Please see here for a map of the campus.

When using electronic navigation systems, try to enter "Am Schwarzenberg-Campus 3, 21073 Hamburg" or "Kasernenstrasse 12, 21073 Hamburg" as address. This should lead you to buildings E or F, respectively, which are just next to building H.

For the evening programme on Friday, we will take a walk through the Hafencity of Hamburg, take a look at the new Elbphilharmonie and have dinner in the harbour area.

Here is a list of hotels in the vicinity of TU Hamburg:

Unfortunately, our symposium coincides with a big industrial fair (WindEnergy Messe) in Hamburg, so finding inexpensive hotel accomodation will not be easy.

Some travel directions

Note: On public transport in Hamburg, you are required to wear an FFP2-mask.

  1. From Airport to Hotel Panorama
    1. Take the train S1 (thankfully trains only run in one direction from here) and de-board at Hamburg central station (Hamburg Hauptbahnhof in German, Hamburg Hbf in short).
    2. From here, take the S-Bahn line S3 or S31 in the direction Harburg Rathaus, Neugraben, Buxtehude, or Stade. The trains leave from platform 3 or 4. (When you are on the train, you may want to sit/stand on the right hand side to be able to enjoy the view of the harbour between the stations Hammerbrook and Veddel.) Get off the train at the station "Harburg Rathaus" (17 minutes, one stop after "Harburg").
    3. Leave the platform in the opposite direction that the train was going and take the exit towards "Karstadt". If you see a big shopping place called Karstadt in front of you, you are at the correct place. You are now at the Harburger Ring. Hotel Panorama is now a 100m walk, with the shops on your left and the main street on your right.
  2. From Railway Station to Hotel Panorama
    1. From Hamburg Hbf: follow instructions 1.2 and 1.3 above.
    2. From Hamburg-Harburg: When coming from the south or west of Germany, many ICE- or IC-trains do stop at "Hamburg-Harburg" before going into "Hamburg Hbf". If this is the case for your train, do get off at Hamburg-Harburg already as it saves you at least 30 minutes. From the station, it is less than 10 minutes to walk (or a taxi ride of less than 5 minutes).
  3. From Railway Station to the University
    1. From Hamburg Hbf, follow the instructions as given in 1.2 to get to "Harburg Rathaus".
    2. Leave the platform in the direction in that the train was going, go up the stairs and take the first exit to the right (it is called "Neue Strasse"). When you have surfaced then look around, you should see a bus stop very close. (If you have taken the correct exit, you will not need to cross the road.) From there, take Bus 142 in the direction of "Hans-Dewitz-Ring/ AKHarburg". Your S-Bahn ticket is also valid for the bus. Leave the bus already at the first stop (called "Kasernenstrasse / TU Hamburg").
    3. Look around to see a big red brick building on the other side of the road, which is "Building A" of TU Hamburg. Pass by this building (leaving it on your left hand side), and go down some slope towards a long purple brick building on your right hand side, labelled as "Building E". The conference location, "Building H" is directly opposite to this.
    4. Get out of the train station, find the bus stop, take Bus 142 as described in 3.2 until you reach "Kasernenstrasse / TU Hamburg".
  4. From Hotel Panorama to the University
    • The simplest idea would be to walk to the university. Enter location "Technische Universität Hamburg Audimax 1" to the map, then let google do the job.It should take less than 20 minutes.
    • Else, when you exit the hotel, do not cross the street and walk down the Harburger Ring (in opposite direction of the construction work). Keep walking till you reach a place with lots of bus stops in a row. Walk till the last bus stop, take Bus 142 in the direction of "Hans-Dewitz-Ring/ AK Harburg". Now follow the directions as in 3.2 and 3.3
