Discussion on Project F

Samir Boujijane, 2020/03/31 14:59

Dear Retha, Patrizio, Maximilian and Alexander,

I'm so happy to be part of this great adventure. I'm Samir Boujijane from Morocco, I'm a PhD student, I study partial differential equations with non-autonomous past.

As from Morocco the situation is not quite different, except that one individual from each family is allowed to go outside for essential matters and it is expected to go this way until 21 April. However I'm still working with my supervisors via Internet which is good and I have no problem working here or via email. I hope we will make a great team all together, I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards.

Samir

Good day!

Welcome to the team working on this project! Could I ask that each of you introduce yourself by commenting on this post? Tell us again where you are and how far you are in your studies. If you like, tell us a little more about yourself and your circumstances, e.g., do you currently have a lockdown where you are? Does it influence your internet access? Do you prefer e-mail communication or discussions here in this forum?

I will start. I am a lecturer at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Right now we are on Day 5 of what is planned to be a 21 day lockdown in South Africa. We are not allowed to leave our homes, not even to go for a walk. We are only allowed to go out to buy food and essentials. Essential workers can work, of course. So I am working from home and also have to suddenly teach online. I am quite overwhelmed - it is a huge adjustment, but I believe it should slowly get better now.

My internet connection at home is okay, but quite slow. I trust that I will be able to communicate consistently.

I will send you a first document to start reading by tomorrow. I hope that we will all learn a lot whilst working together on this project!

With best regards! Retha Heymann

Hello everyone,

I'm Max. I study mathematics in Siegen, Germany, for a few years already. I am currently writing my Bachelor thesis on Fredholm complexes, supervised by Heiko Hoffmann who also happens to be the local coordinator of this Internet Seminar.

While there isn't a lockdown in this part of Germany, there are restrictions on meeting in public. A lot of businesses were forced to close, others now work from home. To a student like me this isn't a big change however! Lectures this summer will be held digitally at least for the first two weeks (although there was only a short notice! It will be interesting to see how many lecturers are able to adapt so quickly). With or without a lockdown, the streets are empty. Funnily enough, the woods are now crowded. Apparently the term “home office” is interpreted quite liberally…

I look forward to phase two of this seminar! I already took a peek at the paper by Engel which looks promising! My internet is working as usual. I don't expect any problems communicating via email or in this forum (I'm fine with either).

Best regards,

Maximilian Weinberg

Hello everyone,

I am a master student at the end of the first semester at the University of Wuppertal in Germany, where I also did my bachelor studies. During this time I mostly attended courses in functional analysis and algebra, but I also did some topology. Furthermore I already took part in last year's ISem about ergodic theorems.

In Germany we currently have a “light version” of a lockdown. We are still allowed to go out alone/with one other person/with the family (if I understood the instructions correctly), but except supermarkets, pharmacies/medical practices etc. mostly everything is closed and you have to keep a minimum distance of 1,5 meters to each other (but it is recommended to stay home if possible). For my part, I only leave the house to buy groceries, at the moment, which is a big change but I am optimistic and I hope that things will get better during the next weeks. Nevertheless, the current situation does not influence my internet access at all.

Furthermore, I would prefer communication via e-mail, but I am open for everything and I am really looking forward to work with you on an interesting topic!

I wish all of you a nice upcoming week and a good time at the workshop.

Best regards,

Patrizio Bifulco

Hi Everyone,

I'm Alex and I just started working on my master thesis, which will be mostly about the local Hardy-Space h^1 on general measured metric spaces. My lockdown situation is quite similar to that from Max and Patrizio since I'm from Kiel, Germany: We are only allowed to go outside with at most one other person besides our household and the lectures at our university will be held online until at least the 19th of April. For our communication about the project: I'm fine with either communicating via e-mail or via this discussion forum.

Hope you all stay healthy and I'm looking forward to work with you on this project.

Best regards,

Alexander Wittenstein
